Glutathione IV TherapyGlutathione in Edmonton

Glutathione is the body's strongest anti-oxidant

Our Naturopathic Doctors offer high dose Glutathione up to 4000mg (4g) per treatment.

We often see Glutathione patients from Sherwood Park and St. Albert for Glutathione.

We have our Glutathione compounded freshly each week.

Our most aggressive Glutathione treatment combines Glutathione, Vitamin C and Alpha Lipoic Acid - this has been called the "Snow White" by some.

Glutathione and Vitamin C treatment starts at $145.

Glutathione and Skin Health

Glutathione is reputed to enhance skin complexion and tone with repeated administration.

The skin lightening properties of Glutathione include stimulation of lighter pheomelanin pigment synthesis rather than darker eumelanin.

We've observed an enhanced effect when Glutathione is taken daily at home.

In a 2012 study, 60 medical students were given either Glutathione or placebo for 4 weeks.

The melanin indices decreased consistently at all six sites in subjects who received Glutathione indicating a lightening of the skin.

In a 2017 study female subjects were in three groups and took two forms of Glutathione or placebo for 12 weeks.

In the Glutathione groups, melanin index (indicating lighter skin) and skin wrinkles reduced while elasticity increased.

Glutathione and Brain Health

Glutathione plays crucial roles in the antioxidant defense system and the maintenance of oxidative homeostasis in neurons.

GSH depletion in the brain is a common finding in patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

In the landmark study of Glutathione and its use in Parkinson's, 600mg of Glutathione was given twice daily for 30 days in nine patients with early, untreated Parkinson's disease.

The Glutathione therapy had no adverse effect on blood chemistries, liver function tests, blood counts.

Although the total daily Glutathione was 1200mg, this study in our opinion demonstrates that repetitive, daily moderate dose once again does not affect liver function tests adversely.

Aside from the safety, all patients improved significantly after Glutathione, with a 42% decline in disability.

Once Glutathione therapy was stopped the therapeutic effect lasted for 2-4 months.

NAD has published data in a Parkinson's case report which can easily be added to a Glutathione.

Glutathione and Liver Health

Glutathione is present in all mammalian tissues, but is most highly concentrated in the liver.

In one Italian study, looking at chronic fatty liver disease (of various origins) administration of high dose Glutathione.

Glutathione treatment significantly improves liver function tests such as bilirubin, AST, ALT, GGT "even several months after treatment interruption."

Glutathione FAQ

How many treatments do I need?

It depends on what you are using Glutathione for.

For instance, for treating MS relapses we often recommend Glutathione Therapy of 2-6 grams, every other day for 5-7 treatments. This is based off of the experience of Dr. Muradov.

For skin health, at our Naturopath Clinic, we usually administer 2 - 4 grams of Glutathione, 1-2x weekly for 4-12 weeks, usually with 5-10grams of Vitamin C.

What can Glutathione be used for?

Most commonly we use Glutathione treatment for MS, Skin Health and Parkinson's.

We can also use Glutathione therapy for ALS, Lyme Disease, Parkinson's, Neuropathy (diabetic, chemotherapy induced), Anti-Aging, Detoxification and others.

Are they any side-effects?

Surprisingly, not really.

We've administered Glutathione treatment at our Edmonton office in high doses (2 to 5 grams) for 11 years with almost no side effects.

Reviewing the available literature - no adverse hepatic, or renal effects have been published.

If Glutathione is administered too rapidly it can cause brief shortness of breath and a slight head pressure sensation.

Glutathione Biochemistry

Accumulating lines of evidence indicate that Glutathione function is implicated in some neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, Huntington’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis.

Glutathione is produced from three amino acids—glutamate, cysteine and glycine

Glutathione is distributed throughout the human body.

The highest levels are found in the liver, followed by the kidney, spleen, small intestine, brain, pancreas, lung, heart, and muscle.

Glutathione does not reach the brain directly because of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), it can penetrate the BBB only by the mechanism of passive diffusion.

Glutathione IV Therapy & Glutathione Injections in Edmonton

Aesthetic and Antioxidant-Based Skin Therapy at TruMed Naturopathic Clinic

At TruMed in Edmonton, we offer both Glutathione IV therapy and Glutathione Injections as part of our advanced aesthetic and wellness protocols. These treatments are designed to promote skin brightening, improve complexion clarity, and support cellular detoxification and dermatologic health through scientifically grounded intravenous nutrient therapy.

Under the clinical direction of Dr. Eric Muradov, our naturopathic clinic integrates evidence-based antioxidant strategies to help patients achieve healthier, more radiant skin with a focus on cellular function, pigment modulation, and oxidative stress reduction.

The Role of Glutathione in Skin Health and Aesthetics

Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine and is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant in human cells. It plays a central role in:

  • Neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS)

  • Supporting phase I and II detoxification pathways

  • Regulating melanogenesis through tyrosinase inhibition

  • Maintaining immune homeostasis and inflammatory control

When administered intravenously, reduced glutathione (GSH) enters systemic circulation and delivers potent antioxidant and anti-melanogenic activity directly to tissues. Glutathione IV therapy is particularly sought after for its skin-brightening effects, which have been documented in both clinical observation and published studies.

Clinical Application of Glutathione IV Therapy in Cosmetic Medicine

At TruMed, our cosmetic IV therapy protocols pair Glutathione IV drips with high-dose intravenous Vitamin C, which helps recycle oxidized glutathione and enhances overall antioxidant capacity. This two-step infusion process includes:

  1. Vitamin C Infusion to elevate plasma antioxidant levels

  2. Glutathione IV administration in a separate dedicated bag

Our Naturopathic Doctors often employ moderate to high-dose protocols depending on the individual’s aesthetic goals, skin phototype, and detoxification capacity. Treatments typically last 30–45 minutes and may be initiated at the time of initial consultation.

Mechanisms of Skin Brightening: The Science Behind Glutathione

Glutathione exerts its skin-brightening effects through inhibition of tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for the conversion of L-tyrosine to melanin. In doing so, it not only decreases eumelanin (darker pigment) synthesis but also encourages the production of pheomelanin, resulting in a lighter, more uniform skin tone over time.

Clinical Evidence Supporting Glutathione in Cosmetic Dermatology

A number of peer-reviewed studies support the efficacy of glutathione in improving skin tone and overall skin quality:

✧ 2012 Randomized Controlled Trial (Thailand)

Participants who received oral glutathione for 4 weeks showed statistically significant reductions in melanin index across multiple anatomical sites, demonstrating visible skin-lightening outcomes.

✧ 2017 Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study

Subjects were randomized to receive reduced glutathione, oxidized glutathione, or placebo over 12 weeks. Both glutathione groups experienced decreased pigmentation, improved skin elasticity, and reduction in fine wrinkles, supporting both its aesthetic and anti-aging properties.

These outcomes support the growing use of glutathione injections and IV therapy in cosmetic medical practice.

Nutritional Optimization of Glutathione Synthesis

To further support and sustain glutathione activity between IV sessions, our protocols often incorporate key micronutrient cofactors and precursors, including:

  • N-acetylcysteine (NAC): Cysteine donor for endogenous glutathione synthesis

  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): Enhances intracellular GSH recycling

  • Riboflavin (B2): Essential for glutathione reductase function

  • Pantothenic Acid (B5): Involved in CoA production and detox pathways

  • Methylcobalamin (B12): Supports redox status and detoxification

  • Selenium: Required cofactor for both glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase

In some cases, oral alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) may be recommended for its ability to regenerate intracellular antioxidants and support mitochondrial health.

Cosmetic IV Treatment Schedule

At TruMed, our glutathione IV therapy is typically administered 1–2 times per week for 4–6 weeks, depending on the patient’s goals and Fitzpatrick skin type. Each treatment plan is tailored by our Naturopathic Doctors to ensure optimal efficacy and safety. Oral nutraceutical support and topical depigmenting agents (such as niacinamide) may be incorporated into a comprehensive aesthetic program.

Glutathione Injections in Edmonton

In addition to IV therapy, glutathione injections are available as a rapid and convenient alternative for patients seeking skin benefits with minimal time commitment. While less intensive than full infusions, glutathione injections still provide meaningful antioxidant and skin support, particularly when used in series or alongside oral and topical adjuncts.

Glutathione IV Therapy in Edmonton - Gluta Drips

Cosmetics - Glutathione does appear to have cosmetic benefit with repeated IV treatment.

IV Glutathione can be used for a wide range of conditions. Our Naturopaths have been administering Glutathione IV Therapy in Edmonton since 2010.

The skin brightening and lightening properties of Glutathione injections are thought to be primarily from stimulation of  pheomelanin (lighter) pigment production.

Our Naturopaths have administered thousands of IV Glutathione treatments at our Edmonton clinic and the incidence of side effects is exceedingly low.

Administration time for a Glutathione drip is short. Our Naturopaths often administer a Glutathione drip over 5-15 minutes with minimal IV dilution.

Glutathione injections or Gluta Drips can be added to many other IVs including IV drips with Vitamins as well as NAD infusions.

Frequency of IV Glutathione injections depends on what we're using the Glutathione IVs for.

For inflammation our Naturopaths often suggest frequent glutathione injections (eg. every other day). Some of the original Glutathione injection literature in Parkinson's has daily IV Glutathione administration.

For skin lightening and brightening our Naturopaths usually suggest 1-2 Glutathione IV Therapy treatments weekly for 4-8 weeks - all done by our nurses in our IV Therapy suite in Edmonton.

Our Naturopaths will give IV NAD+ and IV Glutathione Injections back to back for longevity.

Doses of IV Glutathione injections can range anywhere from 2-4 grams for most patients.
