About Hyperbaric Chambers
Hyperbaric Effects:Hyperoxygenation - Increased oxygen from Hyperbaric treatment enhances tissue metabolism Stem Cell Mobilization: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy mobilizes stem cells to aid in tissue healing. Collagen Formation: Hyperbaric Therapy increases the number & activity of collagen producing cells. Enhanced Immune Activity: Increased Oxygenation enhances white blood cell action. See our Hyperbaric website Curious? Don't be shy. About IV Therapy
IV Therapy Effects100% absorption - IV Therapy guarantees 100% absorption of a given dose. Our Naturopathic doctors are able to give precise doses with none of the gastrointestinal side effects as can be seen with oral Vitamins and Minerals. Higher blood levels - Gastrointestinal saturation is "side-stepped" by IV Therapy and our Naturopathic doctors can administer higher doses of nutrients like Vitamin C and Magnesium which translates to higher blood levels and therefore higher cellular levels. Pharmacologic effects - IV Therapy dosing allows nutrients to exert pharmacologic effects for instance, Vitamin C which is regularly involved in immunity also has an "anti-cancer" effect when the levels are high enough to generate peroxide. Rapid results - IV Therapy results are often extremely rapid, most commonly a robust effect is seen within 24 hours which is simply rarely seen with oral therapies.

Hyperbaric Research
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has a long history of research for many conditions.
Our Naturopathic doctors have summarized some of the medical research for Hyperbaric Therapy.
Hyperbaric Oxygen has shown benefit in a range of autoimmune diseases.
According to Butler (2009) Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has supressive effects on secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and displays immunomodulatory effects including decreased production CD4 cells (TH1/TH17) and increased percentage of CD8 cells (Al-Waili et al. 2006).
MS:
Significant data exists for the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen in MS with healing of damaged neurological tissue as the main goal.
For instance, Oriani et al (1990) studied 44 MS patients with Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers - 22 in the 100% Hyperbaric oxygen group versus compressed air for 1 month then multiple "booster" treatments over 12 months.
In the Hyperbaric Oxygen group, 14/22 MS patients reported benefits vs. 2/22 in the Hyperbaric air group.
Dr. Muradov has extensive experience treating MS with Naturopathic medicine.
Psoriasis:
Butler (2009) showed good results using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in two patients with the use of multiple 60 minutes sessions (2.8 ATA pressure - our Hyperbaric Chambers are capable of 2.8 ATA at our Edmonton office).
A 40-year-old man with full body psoriasis and also had psoriatic arthritis. Only eight sessions, resulted in significant amelioration of symptoms.
A 55-year-old man with extensive psoriasis had significant improvement after 15 sessions.
Our Naturopathic doctors have significant experience treating Psoriasis in our Edmonton clinic. We find identification and elimination of food allergies and sensitivities a cornerstone treatment.
Rheumatoid Arthritis:
Rui-Chang (1994) used Hyperbaric Chambers in 37 patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Relief of pain and swelling with improved mobility was seen. 24.3 % recovered completely, 51.4 % improved markedly.
Only 8.1 % failed to respond.
Our Naturopaths also use foods as the foundation for RA treatment in our Edmonton patients because numerous investigators have reported that food allergy is an etiological or triggering factor in some patients with RA in addition to dietary lectins.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease:
Dulai 2014 conducted a systematic review of the effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in IBD based on 17 studies involving 613 patients. 286 of these were diagnosed as Crohn’s disease and 327 as Ulcerative Colitis.
The overall response rate using Hyperbaric treatment was 86% in Crohn’s disease and 88% in Ulcerative Colitis.
The combination of tissue healing effects and anti-inflammatory effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen are thought to have a particularly synergistic effect in the treatment of IBD.
Naturopathic medicine once again uses food allergy identification as a base treatment in IBD. Oral Curcumin, LDN, and Fish Oil are frequently utilized Naturopathic therapies. LDN requires referral in Edmonton.
Neurological Disease:
The most important effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen are on the Brain. The brain consumes 20% of the body's oxygen despite being only 2% of the body's weight.
Improvement of microcirculation, cerebral metabolism, and mitochondrial function as well as Stem Cell mobilization are some of the main effects of Hyperbaric treatment in neurological disease.
Vascular Dementia:
Xu 2019 looked at 158 patients with Vascular Dementia. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy was given 5 days per week, for 12 weeks. After treatment, compared with the control group, the the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores were significantly increased.
The authors concluded Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy "can improve cognitive function in patients with VD, and its mechanism may be related to elevated serum Humanin levels." which were significantly increased in the Hyperbaric group and were correlated with MMSE scores.
Our Naturopathic doctors have used Vinpocetine for vascular dementia in our Edmonton patients as it can improve blood flow in the brain as it can inhibit phosphodiesterase.
Stroke:
A massive amount of research has been conducted on the potential positive effects of Hyperbaric Therapy for sequela related to Chronic stroke.
Neubauer and End (1980) used Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in patients with both acute and chronic strokes. Of the 79 patients with chronic stroke patients 65% reported an improvement in the quality of life (up to 9 years after the stroke)
Efrati et al.(2013) looked at Hyperbaric treatment in 74 patients with chronic stroke. 40 treatments were used and significant neurological improvements were seen in this chronic stroke population up to three years after the stroke.
Most impressively, both studies suggest that partial restoration of brain function can still be activated long after the initial insults and this may have applicability to other types of brain injury.
Possibly synergistic benefit may be seen by the use of phospholipids (which can be given orally and via IV Therapy) and Hyperbaric treatment.
Hyperbaric Oxygen is the main treatment our Naturopathic Doctors use for Stroke at our Edmonton office. In 2022, we've seen some excellent preliminary effects using IV NAD+ in Stroke.
Lyme:
Chronic Lyme disease symptoms are often vague and resemble numerous other conditions including: Memory loss or cognitive impairment, Fatigue, Numbness or tingling of extremities, Balance or coordination problems, Cardiac and Joint issues, Balance problems and many others.
In the 1990s, patients with "post-Lyme disease syndrome" (PLDS) were treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy the "Texas A&M University Pilot Program". Chronic Lyme patients underwent up to 40 1 hour Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy sessions. A pressure of 2.36 ATA was used which is a pressure our Hyperbaric chambers are capable of at our Edmonton office.
Improvement or resolution of Chronic Lyme neurological symptoms was observed in 37 of 38 subjects within 3 weeks of completing treatment and the effect from Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment was sustained in approximately 70 % of subjects for up to 6 years.
For primary Lyme treatment our Naturopathic doctors often refer out however we do offer Edmonton IV Therapy that can be helpful for healing from Chronic Lyme - IV Alpha Lipoic Acid, IV Glutathione and IV Phospholipid Therapy.
TBI:
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a trauma to the brain caused by external forces and up to 90% of TBIs are classified as mild TBI (mTBI) or concussion Post concussion syndrome (PCS) is a set of symptoms succeeding mTBI in most patients which our Naturopaths have seen numerous times at our Edmonton office.
The brain is utilizes almost all oxygen provided to it for energy production however the regeneration process after brain injury requires much additional energy. Therefore, oxygenation can provide additional oxygen for energy production.
Harch et al. 2012, looked at Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in 16 war veterans with mild to moderate TBI, Post-Concussion Syndrome and PTSD, where each patient received 40 Hyperbaric Chamber sessions. A chamber pressure 1.5 ATA was used for 60 minutes. 1.5 ATA is the lowest pressure our Hyperbaric chambers are capable of at our Edmonton office.
80% of patients reported improvement in a majority of their mTBI symptoms after Hyperbaric treatment.
Our Naturopaths have seen impressive results using Glutathione IV Therapy at our Edmonton office for mTBI post concussive symptoms.
Athletics:
Hyperbaric Oxygen has a range of mechanisms that are relevant to sports injury: reduction of edema, an anti-inflammatory effect, new blood vessel and bone formation, stimulation of collagen production and stem cell release.
Ishii et al (1999) looked at 22 athletes with various injuries where Hyperbaric oxygen treatment was used at with chamber pressures between 1.3 and 2.0 ATA, with dives from 30 to 90 minutes.
Our Hyperbaric chambers are easily able to go to 2.0 ATA at our Edmonton clinic.
More than 70% of the patients experienced improvement after Hyperbaric treatment.
In the context of sports injury, our Naturopathic doctors often focus on oral enzymes, and IV Therapy treatments with additional Zinc, Lysine and Vitamin C for collagen production for our Edmonton patients.

Hyperbaric oxygen is well known in the management of radionecrosis (healing of tissue damage from radiation therapy for Cancer). However, Mechanistically, Hyperbaric Oxygen can be often paired with other metabolic cancer therapies.
One of the major challenges in the treatment of cancer is the occurrence of local hypoxia (low oxygen) within the central tumour areas which is known to mediate some chemoresistance and radioresistance. Cancers metabolism is characterized by lactic acid production a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect.
All of which can be offset by the introduction of additional oxygen from techniques such as Hyperbaric oxygen.
With regards to the general effect of Hyperbaric Therapy on Cancer, numerous investigators have found that Hyperbaric Oxygen generally has a neutral effect on Cancer. For instance, in a review by Feldmeier (2003) the group stated "In vitro, in vivo and clinical studies strongly suggest no more than a neutral effect of HBO2 on tumor growth. In fact some studies suggest a negative impact of HBO2 on malignant progression or formation."
Although Hyperbaric treatment itself is somewhat neutral, it is thought to synergize with other anti-cancer therapies such as IV Therapy with Vitamin C or Alpha Lipoic Acid through oxidative or metabolic actions respectively. Also, reoxygenation of hypoxic tumor cells is thought to induce degradation of HIF-1 and subsequent VEGF production.
Poff and D’Agostino (2013) used a mouse model of metastatic cancer to compare tumor progression and survival with a standard diet or Ketogenic diet with or without Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Hyperbaric chambers delivered 2.5 ATA pressures for 90 min, three times weekly. These are pressures our Hyperbaric chambers are capable of delivering at our Edmonton clinic.
The ketogenic diet alone significantly decreased tumor growth, and increased mean survival time by 56.7% in mice with systemic metastatic cancer. Hyperbaric Oxygen alone did not influence cancer progression, combining the Ketogenic diet with Hyperbaric Oxygen elicited a significant decrease in tumor growth rate, with a 77.9% increase in mean survival time
